That's a really good question. In the overall scope of things, I don't think Sport athletes should be held up as role models, but some are. There's a whole generation who fell in love with Kobe Bryant as a basketball player because he was a GOOD player. He may not have had his act together when he first started and I think he grew into the role. -- Now if a sports athlete takes on that role and strives to be a role model, I applaud them. It's not easy. Look what happened to Tim Tebow. Then there's Clayton Kershaw who is a great baseball player, but not too many know of his work and role model behavior outside of playing.
Maybe there's layers - I'm a role model because I'm a good player, but my personal life is a wreck. I'm a role model because I'm a good person, but I'm not that great a player. Finding a good player and a good role model both is a challenge. Maybe Patrick Mahomes has found that balance. He's a great player and he is a good family man. Lots of food for thought with this question.
