This is a tough crowd! I'm not judging any of you ... just making an observation. And now, I'll offer a slightly different perspective (although some have already expressed a slight leaning this way). I think athletes should be seen as role models IF they are good people. By good people, I mean they work hard, present themselves well in both their public and private lives, display good sportsmanship, treat others with respect, support their fellow competitors/teammates, and are generous benefactors. There isn't anything inherently wrong with choosing to "play games for a living." We all have different passions, skills, and goals, so one person's choice (in my opinion) should never be considered better or worse than another's. They're just different. I definitely don't believe in idolization or hero worship. I don't think it's healthy. Too much attention focused on another distracts from our ability to improve ourselves. Go ahead and admire someone ... for who they are, what they do, how they act, what they've accomplished, how they think, a particular talent, etc. ... just not in excess. Remember ... they're not perfect ... they're human. Thanks for "listening"! |
