In the part of the world where I live - Northern Ireland - traditional politics have not veered too far from Constitutional/ Sectarian loyalties. In recent years however, we've been a world leader in demonstrating how sensible, progressive folk can share power in an atmosphere of mutual respect. My entire 40-year public career was devoted to making my own small contribution towards achieving these aims, often sadly at the cost of family ties and friendships. So I think I'd have to answer your question in terms of simple personal commitment, in spite of other external pressures?
