He was! He played a lot of good roles. There's a story that in Top Gun, Tom Cruise's character is bragging about being inverted on top of a MiG and the teacher can believe it. The class can't believe it either but don't say anything. Then, out of nowhere, Val Kilmer's character, Ice Man, says "Bulls***," under his breath and everyone just laughs and it lightens the moment in the class. That line was totally adlibed by Val and it worked so well that it stayed in the movie. He just broke a uniqueness to his characters that was subtle and sublime and I think that's what what his roles memorable.
