Detective stories. I have a semi-serious detective (with a one-word name, Holdfast) ready to go and he's featured in two or three stories so far, but it's the plot that I struggle with. Thinking up something intriguing enough to solve or not (as the case may be), that's my problem.
But I suppose that tends to be the problem whatever the genre - ideas don't grow on trees.
Oh, and the other thing about detective stories is the temptation to mimic the Mickey Spillane type of hard-nosed, cynical view of the world. I have to resist that - it's been done by others who really feel that way.
