Honestly, I only use dialogue to help move the plot along and to mix the plot up. I mean, too much of one thing seems boring to me.

As for the dialogue: when I edit my story, I read it out loud. For dialogue between two characters, I use a different voice to keep them straight. If I stumble over one section, I know I need to re-work it. Dialogue should flow easily and make sense to the reader. I read it out loud because you will hear a problem before you see it in writing. I believe it's because you know what you've written and tend to skip ahead when you just read.
