Possibly I am very sensitive to the AI-absent issue because I have started using AI more[*] and so it has become a very salient factor, and I assume that as times progress the absence of reference to AI will become more noticeable. Maybe the less extravagant comparison would be to a "contemporary" book series that started in 1990 and has continued through 2005. By which time readers will be wondering how come there's no mention of cell phones or the internet, and in which it becomes difficult to add references to those without shining a harsh spotlight on their absence in the earlier books. Is it the reader's problem if they don't notice the story started being written so long ago? Maybe. But I can't help feeling it's part of the author's job to prevent that from being an issue for anyone. (That's me, the author-as-martyr!) [* In my defense I am using it more as a substitute for search engines, and hence psychologically I am as inclined to trust AI as I am to trust the kind of stuff that a search engine would turn up. Which is to say that I take it with about 70% confidence. AI definitely is a GIGO machine. But if I dismiss it for accepting internet garbage as input, then I must equally dismiss the entire internet for being filled with garbage.] |
