>> And isn't the book supposedly written in some weird version of Latin not the standard dead type that is commonly used today? The ironic thing is, that was one of the earliest notes I inserted into the story, to explain any bad Latin I might accidentally insert, because I didn't know Latin and didn't trust Google Translate. If I was starting it over, I wouldn't have to put in that disclaimer because I would let the story assume that AI was providing good translations (once Will got past the browser crashes and other magical hinky stuff)! And now that you mention that disclaimer, the question arises, Why does no ever make a cripplingly wrong mistranslation, given that it ought to be easy to do? So here I go again, making troubles for myself that no ever thought were troubles! I do like what you (WS) say about it being in Will's character to be so lazy and bored with the project that he doesn't even think to ask AI. The time capsule is the only place where the absence of a reference to AI does bother me. By and large, it can just be ignored. Computers hardly figure in the story, and to the extent that AI would be relevant, it can be subsumed under just referring to "going online" to get some help with whatever. But I will close by countering some of the AI hate. I asked ChatGPT this afternoon for a recipe for a Thai dish that uses lemongrass paste and coconut milk, and the recipe it gave me yielded one of the best meals I've had in a LONG time. |
