D&D Monster Manual (2024)
by Wizards of the Coast | 384 pages
I finally got around to reading through this third of the three core rulebooks released by Wizards of the Coast in connection with their 2024 update to the 5th Edition rules. Having started playing the new rules with my weekly game group, I think we're finally starting to get the hang of some of the nuances, and they did a decent job overhauling a lot of the monster stat blocks in this book to take advantage of the new rules. Even though they claim that all the 2024 materials are backward compatible, I noticed that some of the monster features in this updated book have been seriously overhauled to account for some of the new rules in the Player's Handbook... to the point where I'm not sure I'd recommend using the new rules without these new adjustments to the standard monsters.
I picked this book because I was a huge fan of the 2023 franchise reboot with the film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. (Not so much the trilogy of films that were produced before that ). The filmmakers' love for the tabletop roleplaying game that inspired it really shone through and I can only hope that they're going to develop and produce another one sooner or later. Who knows, maybe some more of the classic monsters from this book will be in the next one!
