Welcome to Writing.Com, SM Yeardley. I didn't start writing (beyond class assignments, that is) until my final year in college when I took a creative writing class on Essay writing. Fell in love with writing then and there. Most of my essays were personal ones of things that happened to me growing up with a bent toward humor. I started out bad--I really needed to brush up on grammar, punctuation and spelling. That was almost 50 years ago, and I ain't stopped writing since.
Seriously, I think writing is intensely personal when you start. Learn those basics--grammar, punctuation and spelling--and keep writing. You will get better. And folks will read your work. When you receive a review of your work, consider it carefully. Pick what you like from it and leave the rest. A review is just one person's opinion at that point in time, and you can take it or leave it.
Finally, don't be afraid to reach out for help if you get stuck with some aspect of writing, or of the site. We're a friendly lot. And there a great reference guide for the site--"Writing.Com 101"
