So, I've spent a bit of time with ChatGPT the last couple of days and wanted to add my own observations first. I started out with one thread, just to get a feel of what I could get it to do. This felt very organic as I could cross reference what it was doing more easily, but poor Chat got confused at about the 4800 word mark. I'd tried to be clever and get it to dynamically build the plot summary as we read each chapter. Here's what happened (and I'm kind of paraphrasing here): Me: That's great, could you append that to the plot summary Chat: Sure thing boss! (changes the plot summary for chapters 1 and 2) Me: Uh, Chat, you've actually changed earlier bits of the document. How did that happen? Chat: Oh, I used this regular expression here... Me (Thinking):Why would you even do that, its a simple concatenation operation Me: Can you revert to the old version of the document, and try again? Chat Of course! Here you go (successfully reverts to original document before modifying plot summary for chapter 1 and 2 again) Me: Yeah... I'll be currating the plot points summary from now on So I tried the multiple different threads approach this morning. First thing I did was make a Chat about Chat so I could ask Chat how Chat works. And I asked it if I could make a library of documents that could be shared between chats, so I'm not repeatedly uploading the same files to the different chats. And it assured me, that yeah, it could read files from Google drive. Which was followed by a 20 minute discussion with chat about "no, that's not a docx file" and "Google docs clearly says it is" before I eventually asked Chat if the sharing link was the problem. At which point it says "oh yeah, thats it". So I get chat to help me properly format the link. It says "yeah that's a docx file now" And then Chat turns round and says "oh, I can only read plain text from Google Drive". If it was a human being, I'd have assumed it was fucking with me. Instead, I'll just confirm that it's clear Chat is really bad at volunteering necesary information. |
