It's a long one but my favourite because it gives me a chance to take my bogus American accent for a walk. Clem and Jethro were miners and the best of buddies. They lived in a little town at the foot of a mountain. The mine where they worked was at the top of the mountain. Every morning Clem and Jethro would walk together up the road to the top of the mountain and go down into the mine to work. In the evenings they'd get out of the mine and walk together down the road to the town, where they'd spend the night. One morning, which was a Monday morning as I recall, Clem got up and waited in the usual place for Jethro to turn up. But Jethro never arrived. So Clem figured Jethro must be sick or something and he started to walk up the road alone. Halfway to the top of the mountain, he spied Jethro standing just a little bit to the side of the road. "Mornin' Jethro," said Clem. "Mornin' Clem," replied Jethro. "You gonna walk up the mountain with me?" asked Clem. "Nope." So Clem walked up the road to the top of the mountain, worked in the mine all day and, in the evening when he was walking down the mountain, he saw Jethro still standing where he had been in the morning. "Evenin,' Jethro," said Clem. "Evenin,' Clem." "You gonna walk down the mountain with me?" "Nope." So Clem went down the road to the bottom of the mountain, slept in the little town, and the next morning, which was a Tuesday morning, he got up and started walking up the road to the top of the mountain. Halfway up he saw Jethro still standing by the side of the road. "Mornin,Jethro," said Clem. "Mornin' Clem." "You gonna come on up to the mine with me?" "Nope." So Clem walked up the road to the top of the mountain, worked in the mine all day and, in the evening when he was walking down the mountain, he saw Jethro still standing there. "Evenin,' Jethro," said Clem. "Evenin,' Clem." "You gonna walk down the mountain with me?" "Nope." So Clem went down the road to the bottom of the mountain, slept in the little town, and the next morning, which was a Wednesday morning, he got up and started walking up the road to the top of the mountain. Halfway up he saw Jethro still standing by the side of the road. "Mornin,' Jethro," said Clem. "Mornin,' Clem." "You gonna walk up the mountain with me?" "Nope." So Clem walked up the road to the top of the mountain, worked in the mine all day and, in the evening when he was walking down the mountain, he saw Jethro still standing in the same place. "Evenin,' Jethro," said Clem. "Evenin,' Clem." "You gonna walk down the mountain with me?" "Nope." So Clem went down the road to the bottom of the mountain, slept in the little town, and the next morning, which was a Thursday morning, he got up and started walking up the road to the top of the mountain. "Evenin,' Clem." "You gonna walk down the mountain with me?" "Nope." So Clem went down the road to the bottom of the mountain, slept in the little town, and the next morning, which was a Friday morning, he got up and started walking up the road to the top of the mountain. "Evenin,' Clem." "You gonna walk down the mountain with me?" "Nope." So Clem went down the road to the bottom of the mountain, slept in the little town, and the next morning, which was a Saturday morning, he got up and started walking up the road to the top of the mountain. Halfway up he saw Jethro still standing in the same dang place. "Mornin,' Jethro," said Clem. "Mornin,' Clem." "You gonna walk up the mountain with me?" "Nope." So Clem walked up the road to the top of the mountain, worked in the mine but not all day. Saturday was a half day, you see, and so Clem got out of the mine at midday. He started walking down the road to the bottom of the mountain. Halfway down he saw Jethro still standing there. "Goodday,' Jethro," said Clem. "Goodday,' Clem." "You gonna walk down the mountain with me?" "Nope." But it being a half day, Clem had a bit more time on his hands and he just sorta hung around a bit. After a time, he asked a question. "Jethro, ain't you ever gonna walk up and down the mountain with me like you used to do before?" Jethro pondered on this for a while and then he answered. "Well, Clem," he said, "reckon as how I surely will, just as soon as I can get my foot out of this bear trap." |
