I think the author is Joan Aiken (not 100% sure).
I read it years ago.
It was about this girl on a quest about something to do with her ancestry - and she goes through all sorts of adventures and meets all sorts of people to try and track it -- and then she dies before she can find out!
It was crazy, I thought - why did I read this whole thing if I wasn't going to know the answer at the end!
