I'm not sure, I guess repositories of knowledge. But it's not that simple. Universities and Colleges have become businesses selling themselves yet being prohibitively expensive in the United States. Claiming to be a path to a better life. Admittedly some people with degrees do go on to bigger and better things. But there's no guarantee that a student will end up having the career they desire. Especially when they struggle so much that their Academic Advisor gives up on them. When the career center at the university just has the student take a career aptitude test and hands them an overwhelming stack of papers. Then says "these are a list of employers that hire in the area. Good luck." Then the student is just expected to find that path without further help. So if a person knows how to use the education system to their advantage, thats great. However the clueless will flounder in the sea of Post Secondary Education. Universities are great ideas. Being smart is good. However without proper support throughout a student's journey, they won't succeed. The system is only beneficial if the participants are willing and have the help and encouragement to succeed before they even arrive.(i.e. High school graduates, no matter how intelligent, only succeed in Post Secondary if their schools along the way actually do things to encourage and guide them.) Just saying. |
