I think colleges and universities play a role in preparing students on the individual level for the adult world in terms of developing critical thinking skills and other fundamentals. Unfortunately, with the skyrocketing costs of tuition and the job market being what it is, it's no longer true that a college degree is an automatic ticket to a better financial situation. Which is sad, because I really believe in the value of higher education.
On a broader, societal level, I think higher education is an important incubator of new ideas: research and development, new technologies, etc. Which is why I think it's so unfortunate that the current administration is waging such a war on college and university funding; there's no telling how much future value is being destroyed by shutting down programs and grants that have, historically, been an incredible driver of economic development.
