While I was still a mere teacher and hadn't yet crossed the line over to administrator, I was a member and finally chair of the grievance committee. We met and heard the grievances that teachers presented regarding a number of topics that affected their work lives. We first evaluated the difficulty and validity of the grievance, then either counseled the griever if it wasn't a grievable item or attempted to mediate a solution if it was grievable. If mediation was unsuccessful, we prepared and presented a formal grievance, first to the school's administration and ultimately to the School Board. Once I became an administrator, I stopped participating in union affairs; it became much more political at that level, as players jockeyed for promotion and position.
