A favorite author of mine is also relatively local to me. CJ Box is from Wyoming. He hit gold when he created his Joe Pickett character. I've read every book so far in that series. I just completed the newest one.
Joe Pickett is a normal man, a game warden, in Wyoming. He's a husband, father and diligent worker for the state. But he gets into the most interesting predicaments. They usually involve bad people doing one bad thing after another, rustling, poaching, stealing, murder, drugs. I think almost every crime against humanity has been explored in his many novels.
But an enduring theme is one of the bad villain always 'getting it' in the end. Evil never triumphs for long. The current story is a carry-over from a story that ended in a cliffhanger a few years ago. Murder of a character's wife, leaving Joe's friend without his life partner and mother of his child. That is where the current story starts.
Box uses many devices to move a story along, including the remote mountains of Wyoming and Montana, the unpredictable weather in my neck of the woods and a sport few know about - falcons. Plus the goings on of a wildlife game warden. He includes also the dynamics of small-town living, ranch and farm facts, and politics. Truly great writing.
I met this author one night at a book signing. He is as original as his stories. May we all be original and write what we know.
