I never watched BB, but of course know it. One of my fave stories is a movie, My BigFat Greek Wedding. I love the father issues, and how FMC, Toula, handles them (through the "back door", making him believe it's all his doing). I had to make kind of a "survival" against an overpowering Father Figure, too, using similar "tools"). In the end, she gets what she wants, even against his will... and they reconcile, eventually. I won't have that chance anymore... but still the one to get what I want: a companion who takes me as I am, past trauma, crowded psyched-out attic, and all. Like the Vince to my Laura. The universal themes in my stories are: ā LOVE: fearing it, craving it, getting it ā TRAUMA: battling it, overcoming it, growing on it, becoming a new person around it ā FAMILY: dysfunctional vs. "normal", and finding your own way with your family in that polarity ā MENTAL ILLNESS: from bipolar disorder over (complex) PTSD to Autism and/or ADHS. Grappling with them, coming to terms with them, accepting them and using them as vital tools in the end to forge a person and a life. So they're vital parts of my novel series (three quite rough parts yet, all written during NaNo, when it still existed) ā and both, Laura and Vince dealing with them to varying extents. |
