I personally think weather - locations - health of characters - inanimate objects - all can be used as antagonists.
So if you're in the mountains, hiking, and a storm suddenly arises. That storm could be an antagonist. It, the storm, is your character's adversary. The battle is about surviving a storm. Been there - done that.
Could animals be used as antagonists? Of course - meeting a grizzly bear on a trail is a definite adversary. Or a hawk trying to attack you at a camping site. Again, been there - done that.
