Unless you count pens and pencils, I've never really pilfered material objects. I am guilty of stealing ideas, though most musicians who arrange/compose are also guilty of that. One example that comes to mind is my treatment of the trombones in an arrangement of "Can You Read My Mind"; I stole the idea of pyramiding the 'bones from Dee Barton's arrangement of "Here's That Rainy Day", which he did for the Stan Kenton Orchestra.
