It can be a hard sell for some, doesn't mean it hasn't been done. Some also can't sell over 120,000 words for a first book. But it has happened. There are variables.
Personally, as a reader, I have a hard time with stories where the main point of view character dies. It's easier if there are a few others that we get to see there point of view because it can be jarring and seem random if it's done just at the end, a sudden switch because the main character dies. But again, personal opinion. That is why, in my original response, I did say that it could work for other readers.
Then again, part of this is a question of whether there is any portion told after the death. If it ends with the death, that might be something different. I've just had a view reads where we get death, in a very short fiction style, then we see the dead person from someone else's point of view as the very end part of the story.
