It helps to do some general research of the area, and era, that you plan to set the story in. This is even true if you plan to do something sci-fi / fantasy / outside of a strictly Historical piece.
I mean, to give an example, let's look at the 1997's Titanic, love story aside, let's look at the guns used in the movie - M1911 (a standard one would have been more historically accurate), some Webley revolvers, and a small Remington revolver. These are very plausible, some of the crew even owned/used Webley revolvers - one even had an FN Model 1900 pistol. What wouldn't be plausible would be the use of Glock pistols, and Colt Pythons, or anything clearly made after April 5, 1912.
