Xander and his younger brother Corrin had been traveling down the main road into Windmire for several hours now, leading an ever-growing procession behind them. The two of them had been fortunate enough to have been out on a "public relations" mission (as Leo would put it). Basically, ensuring that the common-folk of Nohr didn't lose hope in their country following the disastrous war. Garon- or rather the servant of Anankos that had worn his appearance- had truly left the country in a state of disrepair.
Fortunately for the siblings, both of them were recognized veterans and war heroes by both the people of Hoshido and the people of Nohr. The mission had been going well... at least until this latest occurence.
An ever-spreading wave of magic, so powerful that the non-elemantal magic was visible to the naked eye- had abruptly spread across the countryside, and all those caught within its hold (effectively everyone) had experienced the effects of it within moments.
The air had been filled with screams and shouts of confusion as the townspeople they'd been visiting, as well as the members participating in the mission themselves, had abruptly found themselves shrunken and vastly reduced in size.
Xander silently thanked whatever Gods were watching them now for allowing their garments to shrink in size to fit them.
"X-Xander! What do we do? Everyone's looking at us like we have the answers for them? I don't know what's going on, do you?"
Xander sighed as his younger brother came rushing up to him, the young man's cheeks flushed- his chest heaving from exertion. Xander wished his brother would better learn to keep a cool head in uncertain circumstances and learn to adapt to them, but he couldn't fault (and was in fact quite proud of) the initiative Corrin had shown at corralling the panicking townspeople. An hour ago, the townsfolk had been running around screaming, crying, and begging the gods to undo this curse that had been placed on them. Now, they were dutifully crowded around the large ornate fountain in the center of the town square. Corrin had been able to convince them all to follow him, and so they'd marched like soldiers until they reached a place all could recognize.
It had further been fortunate that Xander and Corrin had only been a short march beyond the gates to Windmire- had they been far out in the countryside, running damage-control over such a situation would've likely been an impossible task.
Getting back to his sibling's question, Xander could only sigh and close his eyes. The situation was far from ideal, and to be honest he didn't have a clue of what to do either... but he couldn't let such weakness be shown, not when his people were counting on him to save them. Well, he had an idea- it wasn't much, but it was something.
"Corrin. Assemble all the spellcasters in the square around us. It'd take far too much energy to grow us back to normal without knowing the counter-spell to whatever this was... but we should be able to warp the townspeople into the castle if all of us pool our reserves for one single, great spell. The castle will provide safety, shelter, and food to those affected, and you and I can make for the libraries to find a cure for whatever has happened to us."
Corrin looked relieved at his brother's decisive words, and instantly began calling to the crowd, weeding out those with a talent for magic and separating them from those without.
Xander sighed again. It wasn't much, but it was a shot. Even so, it'd be a while before the mass warp spell was ready. He could only hope that nothing else went wrong with this day...
1. Nothing bad happens, and the warp goes off without a hitch.
2. Switch to Camilla's point of view. Has she yet realized that something's wrong?
3. A small group of Hoshidan women (whom Xander and Corrin recognize as comrades from the war) show up. They were here as ambassadors, but what will they do when they spot the huge crowd of tiny Nohrians? indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
