Chapter #7

A Crazy Experiment Indeed

"We're going to use you in an experiment!" The squirrel shouted.

"Of course you are." You sighed and curled your tail around yourself. There was nothing you could do. You and the other felines trapped in test tubes were carefully packed away into padded bags to ensure the test tubes wouldn't break or come loose. As the backpack was closed everything went dark. Luckily felines could see in pretty well in the dark, but there wasn't much to see other than the other shrunken cats each trying to cope with the situation. You saw some from the command center, and others that you were sure were civilians. It seemed likely there wasn't a single cat in the world who had escaped this shrinking.

Time passed, but you weren't sure how much. You could feel the bag jostle every now and then. You knew the squirrels were transporting all of you somewhere but you had no idea where. Probably some kind of secret lab. Every now and then everything would go still and the squirrels would remove the test tubes from the backpack. You always seemed to be outdoors when this happened, and would be released from the test tube, but surrounded but in an area surrounded by a small barrier the squirrels could easily step over but seemed inescapable to you. Even on the other side you could see blades of grass as tall as trees so wouldn't get far if you escaped.

During these times you were given food as well as time to answer the call of nature before you would be forced back into the test tube then placed back in the backpack. Well at least the squirrels didn't intend on letting the cats starve to death anytime soon, but the fact they wanted all of you alive was even more worrying.

You weren't sure how many days had passed before you finally reached your destination. Trapped inside that backpack you had lost all sense of direction or time. This time when they opened the bag you were inside a building. You couldn't make out much more than the ceiling from the roof unfortunately, but they started removing the test tubes from the bag three at a time. Your turn came and you and two other felines were dumped cylinder shaped box before a lid was snapped over it leaving you in the dark again.

You looked at the other two felines with you, a lioness and a panther. You were the only house cat in this group.

"Well... at least we can walk around in here." The lioness said stretching as she did. "Been trapped in those tubes so long I was worried my legs were going to stop working."

"I get what you mean." The panther dropped to all fours to stretch out.

You took your own chance to stretch and get used to moving around again. By this point you were starting to get used to being so small if only because it had been several days now. You didn't even feel awkward about the fact all three of you were standing here naked. After being stuck this way for awhile the edge of being in your bare fur tended to dull down.

"So... any idea what they have planned?"

"None." The lioness said. "Are intel on the squirrels has always been spotty at best.Half of it is intentionally made up just to throw us off and all of it sounds like a crazy conspiracy theory. There is nothing at this point I'd put beyond them."

Soon you got you answer. The box you were in fell apart on the walls leaving you standing on a colorful table with neon red and white lights surrounding it. Not far from your table was a second one with blue and white lights. On this table there was another box, that like yours had fallen apart. Standing inside of it were three wolves that had been shrunken to the same tiny size as you and your cat allies.

"What the actual hell?" You heard the panther mutter under his breath.

"Ladies and gentleman!" A squirrel popped up between the two tables towering over both cats and wolves. "Welcome to the grand event you've all been waiting for! Welcome to the first episode of War of the Species! Here! We find different species that are at war, capture them and bring them here to compete in a series of head to head contest for your entertainment! At the end of the day! The winning side goes free! Maybe... And the losing side, I don't know maybe we'll shrink them even smaller we'll get to that!"

"They've got to be kidding... A TV show?" You asked. "That's what this is about?"

"Well..." The lionness watched the squirrel and then the wolves. "Squirrels are eccentric, this is not out of character for them. Best option for now might be just to play along until we can come up with an escape plan."

"Now then!" The squirrel hosting the show you were trapped on shouted. "It's time for our first event! Shall we open with a team challenge! Or make this one on one!"
