Jimmy doesn't want to trust the giant vixen before him, but he just can't help it. Those dainty cardinal-glossed lips forming such a gentle smirk couldn't possibly spout lies, could they? The pureness emanating from those azure orbs also serves to soothe the uneasy boy. As renegade fibers of Valerie's bountiful sangria hair glide with the slight breeze across her gorgeously intrigued countenance, Jimmy decides to be truthful despite his better judgment.
"I came for money", Jimmy announces casually.
"That's so stupid!", Valeria scolds in a concerned tone, "Is money worth your life?!".
Jimmy gives a bitter chuckle before answering, "It's worth putting food in the stomachs of my eight brothers and sisters. It's worth keeping my mother from having to work eighteen hour days just so we can keep that run down single room apartment we call home. It's worth finally being able to give my starved father's lifeless body a hole to be buried in proper-like. So yeah, I guess it's worth my life, too".
"I'm sorry", tears begin to well in Valerie's eyes, "I didn't think...".
Valerie's sympathy catches Jimmy off guard. With all he had heard of the giants, they weren't supposed to be so understanding. His heart yearns to reciprocate such kindness as droplets of water start to work their way over Valerie's subtle cheekbones.
"Don't worry about it", Jimmy laughs nervously, "I can be a real drama queen sometimes. Oh, thanks for saving me. I don't think I did that yet".
"You're welcome", Valerie's expression returned to its normal beaming formation, "I'm Valerie, but I like Val better".
"I go by Jimmy", the boy introduces himself.
"It's nice to meet you, Jimmy", Valerie chirps, "So, Jimmy, how exactly were you going to get that much needed cash?".
"Well, Val", Jimmy explains, "I haven't quite figured that out, yet. You've heard of Jack and the Beanstalk, right?".
"That old story?", Valerie questions, "Sure, what about it?".
"It may be just an old story to you", Jimmy informs his gargantuan new friend, "But it's more like a legend where I'm from. A dream, really. I always pretended I was Jack when I was a kid; bravely venturing into a new land, stealing the golden goose and saving my family, killing a gi...".
Jimmy pauses as he realizes his mistake. Surely all the goodwill between Valerie and himself has lost all meaning in his admission of murderous fantasies. He expected her crushing fingers to come for him in a fit of anger, but they never do. Instead, he is shocked to see Valerie lower her head in shame.
"It's okay", Valerie says sadly, "I know we're a bunch of jerks".
"Val", Jimmy is taken aback by Valerie's statement.
"But we're not all that way", Valerie's head pops back up with a look of determination, "I'll show you, if you'll let me".
"What do you have in mind?", Jimmy's curiosity is piqued.
