Chapter #5

other: invisibility and immaterial

Lauren thinks this is a bunch of crap, but then again, this guy seems sincere, knew her name and age with her birthday coming up, and offered to let her try it. He's acting like this is real and legit... and while he could be some sort of creeper, she doesn't figure out a way he could take advantage of her simply by having her try on a bracelet. But as she is mulling this over, her eye catches something that appears to move in the case underneath her, and her head turns toward it.

There is another bracelet, with a swirled blue inlay, and while it seems static, she could swear it was moving, the pattern swirling right before she looked directly at it. Before she even thinks of it, it seems as if she is speaking "What does that one do, the swirled blue one?" Mr. Lee grins and takes the silver bangle with the blue inlay out and lays it on a small velvet pillow before her "Ahh, this is an interesting one, it doesn't work with all people, but when it does, it grants the wearer the properties of a ghost. They become invisible, immaterial, and completely unable to be harmed, not having any physical needs. This one is fairly limited.... indeed, I have to admit I have never tested it, as it doesn't work for me. But, I am led to understand by the wizard who crafted it, that those who can use it, seem to see the pattern moving on the bracelet."

And indeed, as she is listening, she sees the blue swirl, like eddies in the deep of space, and she sighs softly, murmurs "I... I see it moving..." Mr. Lee claps "Indeed? Oh, then you simply must try it on, and if it works and you like it, I shall make it my birthday gift to you... if you will help me study it, experiment with it." Lauren blinks and looks at him, nodding without even thinking it and slipping the bangle onto her wrist.

Nothing happens, but she shivers, feeling SOMEthing when she put it on, and looks at Mr. Lee, who smiles. "It has an enchantment that does two things: first it will not make you vanish while someone is looking at you, but second, when you will it to work, an aura extends, distracting those around you fr...oh, my dear" and he bends down to pick up a bracelet he dropped. Lauren gasps because she had thought of it working, and as soon as she did, he dropped the bracelet. And then when he is not looking, she lets out a scream as she sees herself vanish.

Mr. Lee stands back up and pauses, seeing she is gone, then smiles "Well, it appears to have worked, fascinating charm that protects the wearer from discovery. Lauren, I assume you are still here, and did not dash out of my store. But I can not see you, hear you, feel you, or sense you in any way. I will feel quite foolish if you are no longer here, but you are completely undetectable. You can touch nothing, but simply move where your mind wills, able to pass through any material. You may be able to move things with your mind, but it will take much practice, and I have no real idea how to do so. That sort of experimentation is on you, though. If you are still here, perhaps you could turn back physical please, so I can make sure I am still speaking to you? Here, allow me" and he bends down, putting the other bracelets back in the case.

Lauren is looking at him after her scream, figuring she must have startled him and apologizes "I am sorry si..." but she cuts off, when she sees her arm, just a spectral outline of herself, and realizes the man is speaking. He didn't hear her scream, didn't hear her speak, and as she listens, she realizes it worked. She's a ghost. Well, no, she's not dead, but she has no physical presence anymore! As she listens to him, she walks around a bit, then pauses, walking through a counter, then concentrating and flies into the air, floating around the room. She's a teenager, so she can't help but make some spooky ghost noises, giggling as she moves around the room, but then pauses and lands before him, and then realizes he bent down on purpose to allow her to restore herself, so she does so.

He stands back up and sees her, smiling, and she smiles as well "Sir, this is.... I was... it worked, it's real, I was, well, like a ghost. I didn't have a reflection, I could see through myself, I could float, walk through things....like I didn't exist, but was here!" He smiles "Please, call me Mr. Lee, and I am glad I found a customer for whom this bracelet worked, and accept it as my gift for your birthday, and all I would ask is that you stop by one day next week, to tell me about it, and try some things that I ask, to see if I can learn more about this type of charm."

Lauren smiles and:
