Chapter #5

Two Brains Do More Work Than One

    by: Unknown
At 15, Ryan was currently learning algebra in his math class. Algebra, of course, is never an easy subject to learn, even for someone gifted with numbers, which Ryan certainly was not. Granted, it wasn't as though he was stupid: he was a fairly bright boy who maintained at least a B average in most of his classes. However, he was simply never any good with numbers, and having to do math problems always gave him confidence problems, something that further hindered his grades.

Somehow, confidence wasn't a problem with Berry around. Although she barely knew any more about mathematics than he did, her optimistic presence was a real comfort. Even when a particularly aggravating problem was encountered, she still had the utmost certainty that it could be solved. What's more, having an extra brain to help him think helped Ryan to notice and solve little mistakes. Eventually, after much hard work, Ryan closed the book and put away his homework. For once, he was confident that he had done a good job.

"Thanks, Berry", he said, reclining on his bed. "You were a real help!"

"No problem!" the life sized figurine replied. Checking his watch, Ryan realized that it would soon be dinner time. It was pasta night, and he was eager to dig into his mom's great cooking.

"Hey, Berry, listen. I have to go down for dinner. Nobody in my family knows about you or the other figurines yet, so, even though you don't like shrinking, I need you to go back to doll size, go back into the box, and pretend you're a doll so no one suspects anything, OK?"

"Alright" Berry relented. After reducing her to 6 inches and returning her to the box, Ryan then asked:

"You want me to sneak up something for you? My mom's a great cook."

"It's OK. I actually don't really need food or sleep to survive, really. Isn't that strange?"

"Yeah." Ryan responded with a slight laugh. With that, he went down to the dining room, closing the door behind him.
