“Take a seat, Cherry, and let's get to know each other a bit better,” Nicolas suggested, indicating one of the chairs.
She looked into his eyes and parted her lips. “Nothing I'd like more, dear Nicolas” she told him with a smile.
Nicolas quickly poured wine for them and as the sun slowly set, their conversation flowed easily and naturally. They soon found they had a lot in common, even though she was 22 and he was 41 - “which is really old”, as Cherry helpfully told him. They liked the same music, laughed at the same things and Cherry liked his jokes. She also loved his taste in clothes and how Nicolas had furnished the house, and teased him for having the same first name as the President, adding that “you're not much taller than him either”.
It was the same thing with food and drink. They liked wine but not beer, Cherry preferring white and saying how much she liked the bottle Nicolas had opened. He liked Chinese food and so did she; perhaps she loved Italian cooking more than he did, but there wasn't much in it..
As they sat in the growing twilight, both sipping wine, the balcony lights coming on automatically, they found that they had even gone to the same high school. Nicolas asked about some of his old teachers, two of whom had taught Cherry as well, “though I think they might have retired now”, she had explained. “My English is so good because of one of them, and I think my biology teacher would be a bit surprised at my achievements.” It was the only time since she arrived that either of them even hinted at the purpose of Cherry's visit.
Nicolas noticed Cherry draining her glass, and quickly picked up the bottle. “Allow me to top that up” he offered.
Cherry put her hand over the glass. “I can only have the one, naughty Nicolas” she chided. “Any more and I won't be able to drive home.”
“But why not stay the night here?” he asked. “You'd have a choice of guest rooms here - there's four bedrooms in all, so I'm sure there's one to suit you. I can easily rustle up some bathroom things for you, and there's a robe in each room. If you don't need to hurry back, let's carry on taking it easy.”
Cherry considered the offer. Her boyfriend wasn't back until tomorrow and really she had probably had too much to drink already. She quite liked the idea of staying overnight in this stylish house, too.
She spoke up. “Oh, yeah, why not, I'll stay the night here. Go on, pour me another.” Cherie fixed his gaze with her eyes. As she did so, her stomach let out a low rumble. She burst out laughing. “And there's something reminding us that I'll have to stop the drinking sometime soon because someone's got an appointment right down there. You did want it empty, didn't you?” Cherry patted her stomach.
“Yes please” grinned Nicolas. He thought for a moment. “Are you OK for a bit though? It's just really nice sitting here getting to know you a bit better.”
