As your story unfolds, Caleb's face becomes more and more pinched, until you begin to tell of how you first made contact with Dana through her notebook. At this point, he simply explodes in anger.
"This isn't funny, Dana! David may be... may be dead! And you... you... what the fuck are you thinking?!"
Grimacing, you sigh and push back a few loose strands of hair. "I knew you wouldn't believe me, but maybe you'll believe Dana." With that you lean forward and hork yourself onto the bed.
Dana recovers almost immediately this time. While Caleb is still staring in horror at you, she speaks hesitantly. "It's... it's all true, Caleb." She points at you. "That's David."
* * * * *
"I'm proud of you, you know."
"For what?"
"For telling him. I kind of assumed you wouldn't."
You look sadly down at Caleb's body, which you are now inhabiting. "I almost didn't, but I couldn't stand the way he was beating himself up over my 'death.' I was mad at him for a while, but it was really my own fault that I ended up this way."
Dana bites her lower lip and looks as if she's about to speak. Then she shakes her head and stands up. "I really should be going. I'll see you at school tomorrow."
As you watch her leave, you reflect that her story about how you helped her deal with her nightmare was what brought Caleb around. After that, he seemed almost grateful to have you possess him for a while. Now, with direct access to his memories, you realize why. The military questioning to which he's been subjected has him terrified. Hell, it has you terrified. The general gist of the questions make it clear to you that the military has its doubts about whether you were killed in the explosion, but you have no idea just how much they know or suspect.
Colonel Lord, who led the interrogation, has a daughter in the senior class at your school, Diana. If you left Caleb to his own devices for a couple of days, you could probably get close to the investigation by possessing her. But that feels a little like betraying your best friend. Caleb just wants to escape from all this for a little while, and you'd like to help him.   indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
