You take off the hairpin, and embrace for another burst of pain, but nothing happens.
You look at your reflection in the puddle again, but it's the same.
Pondering on the road again, you sit down and feel this sudden urge to cry.
Your head starts to ache, but before you can shed some tears, a wagon comes towards you.
The driver stops, and looks around, seeing if you are some sort of bait for a robbers trap. Once satisfied that there is no one else around, he talk to you.
"Fair wench, why doth thou waste thy youth on thee road?" he asks.
"I'm not fair, and I am not a wench." you say.
"Then what are thee?" asks the guy.
"I'm Ren, the adventurer." you say.
"Well, Renie, there shalt not be adventures on the side of this road, and such as frame as yours does not speak to adventures."
"A witch did this." you say.
"Ah, old Maggie." says the traveler.
"Old Maggie?"
"A witch, in her forties."
"Yes, her."
"She's a frequent customer at my inn. Come work for me, and you'll see her again." says the diver.
Not believing you have to much of a choice, you agree, and jump on the wagon.
Traveling a day north, you come to a quiet in, in the middle of the woods. It's usually busy, and to earn your keep, you clean tables and take orders. It's not all peaceful though, more than one regular adventurer wants to bed you.
Two months pass, and the old witch never appears. A year later, you realized that you'd been tricked. Still, you're probably better at table cleaning that you ever would have been at adventuring. And the tips are nice.
