“Tell me Seymour, are you good at chess?” Kayva asked when he finished brushing the grass off his pants. “Good, I was the village chess champion for the last three years.” Seymour said proudly. “Splendid, then that shall be the next challenge.” Kayva said before snapping her fingers. As she snapped there was a bright flash of light, when Seymour could see again he was on a gigantic chess board. Either the board was huge or he had been shrunk since Kayva was gigantic again, lying on her stomach across the board. There were several tiny flashes as the pieces appeared; to Seymour these pieces were life sized. The black pieces on Kayva’s side were like the sculpted pieces Seymour was used to playing with, but the white pieces on his side seemed almost too lifelike. Since no king piece appeared around him, Seymour took its place, but he still couldn’t get over how his pieces looked so real. “You like them? I’ve always enjoyed creating my own humans in dreams.” Kayva asked noticing his stares. “These are actual people?” Seymour asked in surprise. “To an extent, these pieces are designed to follow your orders through the game. I doubt your games back home allowed you to be part of the action.” Kayva said smiling, “White goes first.”
Seymour started by sending the pawn in front of his queen forward one square. Then Kayva made the same move, except she moved her pawn forward two squares. “Is there any particular reason my pieces are so… alive?” Seymour asked. “The only difference is how they’re captured. If mine are captured they’ll disappear when you order a piece to that square.” Kayva replied. Seymour was curious what would happen when one of his pieces were captured. ‘I’d better find out now with a pawn rather than later with a more powerful piece.’ He thought before ordering the pawn he moved last turn forward again. When Kayva took the pawn and replaced it with her own, she didn’t set it to the side as Seymour expected. Instead she dropped the human chess piece into her mouth and swallowed it.
