Despite his best efforts to make himself seen by the two burglars, they were not aware of him. Eventually, they found that there wasn't much valuable stuff in Kerri's apartment, and departed quickly with their bags.
From the way the two walked, and what they said to each other, Sam picked up some information about them. One was called Carrie. She had blond hair and wore black sneakers. The other was Tasha. She was Mexican and wore black boots. They were arguing about which apartment to rob next, saying that they had to be more careful about where they stopped.
They took a break at Tasha's place, and set the bags down. You saw this as your time to move, so you hopped out and started running for the door, which was slightly ajar.
