"Really, why not here?" Sam asked, giving me a curious look. It made me think she wanted to ask something else, but it was a sensible question.
"It just seems more fun to do, and we can hang out for a bit, now that Nikki and your kid aren't here" I admitted. Sam chuckled and teased me a bit about it but agreed and after a few minutes we were walking towards the park, catching up about things. From my side there wasn't much to update, general complaints about my bratty cheerleader sister and my mother that kept finding new hobbies to deal with not having a partner after the divorce, while Sam told me that parenthood was more challenging and took up more time than she expected, but she felt lucky to have a partner like Nikki who, on Sam's words, wanted to "make up for it" since Sam was the one that went with the pregnancy.
"So she's like the father in the relationship?"
"Yes, but don't say that in front of her, unless you want to be banned from visiting for a few months" she answered, referring to that incident of back then "You know you're welcome anytime right? Nola would love to play with uncle Matty"
"Okay, will do. I guess I just wanted to give you some space"
"And I appreciate it! First year was definitely something else..things have gotten easier, thankfully. And finally the belly is gone"
"I could see, do you also get to keep um.. those?" A punch on my arm immediately came as Sam chortled
"What kind of question is that? What is wrong with you? I'm going to tell aunt Karen her son is a creep and a perv"
"Just honest curiosity, I swear!" I laughed too, giving her chest a quick glance and looking away for effect. Sam giggled again and confessed she had no idea but she wasn't complaining, changing topics when we arrived to the park and took a sit on a bench.
"I can't believe you dragged me here just to ask that, I thought our relationship was better than that" she joked
"That was not the reason and you know it! I just missed hanging out with you, that's all"
"Aww, but is it me or the parties and drinking?"
"Shut up" I shook my head while Sam laughed again. I didn't want to admit it but she knew she was half right.
"Things really change a lot when you become a parent. I'm not going to promise you anything but maybe we can hang out like the old times some day"
"Thanks, and I'll visit more often. We should all do really, I should bring Tina and Karen with me next time"
"Let me know when you can.. weren't you going to test your toy?" Sam asked me, reminding me of the remote with a look that told me she still didn't believe it, but like the great cousin she was she was willing to humor me all the way. I took a look at the different people around, hoping to pick a target that could wipe that look from her face.
