Chapter #8

Harry and Megan open your eyes.

by: Scifiwizard Retired Author IconMail Icon
You walked over to Harry's house and knocked on the front door. Harry answered quickly and invited you inside. Upon walking into the living room, you found Megan sitting in a chair, they both looked as if they were very worried about you.

"John, my mom knows your family secret." said Megan, wincing. "Your mom told her about your science, she asked me to talk to you about it."

"Don't get us wrong, bro." said Harry quickly. "We both think it's awesome that you have a power equal to your sisters' and mother's magic." he winced as well. "Megan told me your mom's concerns, she has a few valid points."

You were annoyed that Megan and Harry were taking your mom's side but you did not want to throw away your friendship with them over a matter of opinion. Yo took a deep breath, to ease your frustration, then sat down.

"Okay, let's talk about it." you said. "I have a few valid points of my own I wish to share."

Harry nodded. "First of all, John, there are A LOT of power hungry people out there." he said. "Your girl hating cousin, Tim is one good example. What if he gets a hold of that book of yours?"

You winced at that, knowing that Tim would abuse that power and become a real terror rather than a mere annoyance. Not only that, without the safe guards of the laboratory, he would seriously injure himself teaching himself the tricks you had learned.

"My book is kept in a secure place." you replied.

"It wasn't when you were talking to us." said Megan, quietly. "You left it on the coffee table." she paused, I know Tim, he only a second to run off with what he intends to steal."

You winced again. "Alright, you win on that one." you said. "I'm normally more careful than that."

"John, I can't even pretend to understand that insane science you command." said Harry, seriously. "I doubt mom even understands it, despite the insane magic at her command."

"What's your point?" you asked, trying to win, but not succeeding.

Harry sighed. "What if you have an accident and your safe guards failed?" he asked. "Will mom be able to save you with her magic or will her magic mix badly with your science and make things worse?"

You were taken back by the question as you had all of your faith in your numerous counter measures and safe guards. "I... I..." you blushed, knowing that they had won another round. "I'm not sure." you said, quietly.

You began to tear up as you had expected Harry and Megan to be on your side, not going against you. Still, everything they told you carried a valid point. You did not have the facilities necessary to keep the secret behind your power safe alone, nor were you certain mom could save you if you had such an unlikely accident.

"Can you defend yourself against your sisters' and mom's magic without the book or the lab?" asked Megan, surprising you. "I mean, in case they somehow manage to take them away from you?"

"What do you mean?" you asked.

"Hayley said that, besides a few 'magical pranks', she would never hurt you." said Harry. "I'm guessing she means 'pranks' by changing you into a girl or a small child or making you wear embarrassing clothes."

You smiled, catching on. "You mean changing me like this....?"

Then, by mentally manipulating your own DNA, you quickly but painlessly transformed yourself into a female version of yourself! Megan gasped in both fear and delight as she saw that you looked much like Mel, only a little more developed, and had Hayley's style of hair.

"Wow!" said Harry, looking at you. "This is what you would look like as a chick!?!"

"Do not hate me because I am beautiful." you said, surprised by your own voice.

Harry and Megan laughed at that as you then changed yourself back to normal. "I guess you can defend yourself against their magic without the book!" said Megan. "Good for you!"

"Now, for the point I am trying to make." said Harry. "You have showed us that you can work your power without any need of the book or the laboratory. My guess is that your existing powers will grow with age, experience, and practice."

You nodded, not sure where Harry was going with his reasoning. "I follow you so far." you said.

"The power you have is too great for one man to yield alone ." said Harry. "Your uncle created that insane power of science, you found a way to make it stable, based upon what he had just seen... It's time for someone else to take the next step."

You were shocked by what your best friend had just said. "Are you CRAZY!?!" you asked, very frightened and annoyed. "Have you seen the headlines, recently!?!" you shook your head. "Mankind is NOT ready for this science! They will annihilate each other!!"

Harry shook his head. "I was not talking about mankind, John." he said, calmly. "I was referring to the powers that be within the witching world. From what I understand, they have all the facilities needed to keep your science from falling into the wrong hands."

"Also, we heard you say that your science book and the magic book were nearly identical." said Megan. "That, and you were able to freely read it while we were not." she paused. "My guess it that science and magic are so closely related that they act in similar ways."

"Meaning I may be able to work magic, even though I am a boy." you said, following their logic.

Megan and Harry both nod and you considered their words, a small grin forming on your face. "I must admit, the thought of being the first boy witch has its appeal." you said, finally. "And the worst thing that could come of it is that I become a chick for good."

"But you'd be a foxy chick." said Harry, blushing.

You laughed at that. "I didn't know yo cared, Harry." you said, teasing.

Megan laughed then turned to you smiling. "Even if you become a girl, John, you will still have power only you won't have to worry about keeping your secret alone. Your mom and sisters would back you up and help you to adjust to your new life as a girl and a witch."

"Your friends would back you up as well." added Harry. "What do you have to lose besides your manhood, if it comes down to that?"

You sighed. At first, you were sorry you had come to talk to Harry and Megan but now, you were very pleased that you did. You parted company in good spirits, promising to give their words serious thought, then returned home and retrieved your book from its hiding place inside the coffee table.

"It's time for the next step." you thought. "From insane science into magic." you gave a low chuckle. "Magic can go beyond logic so I guess it is a step forward and by becoming a chick, if it comes to that, it would be like visiting a whole other world."

You carried your precious book up the stairs and marched to mom's bedroom and politely knocked on the door.

"Who is it?" came Hayley's voice.

"It's John." you replied. "I wish to give mom something."

The door opened and mom answered, looking at you, uncertain. you could tell she had been crying. That made you tear up as well. "What is it, John?" asked mom.

"I don't want there to be any fighting between you, me, or my sisters." you said. then, you placed your book of chaotic science into her hands. "Therefore, I have decided to take the next step in my training."

"The next step?" asked mom, confused.

You smiled. "My science is inanely advanced but, as Harry and Megan told me, it only takes one person to let that science out." you said. "Mankind is not ready for it. So, to them from themselves, I willingly surrender my book and my laboratory." you paused. "Magic can go beyond logic, beyond science, so... it is the next logical step to increasing my understanding of the world."

Mom smiled, her tears falling as Hayley gave you a grateful smile of her own. Mom moved in to hug you but you rose your hand, as Hayley had done to you, then said. "But I am asking you to allow the changes to occur slowly, over the course of one month and keep your promise to allow me to find my own style. That way, the changes will be completely natural and will go unnoticed by all. I will be accepted by all of my friends and class mates and there will be no need for a cover story, just a new name."

Mom nodded, her smile growing. She had hoped you would come around and see reason, she was pleased you listened to your heart where Jack only saw his pride. She was not sure about you 'saving' mankind but she was not about to ruin anything by mentioning it.

"Have you thought of a new name for yourself, John." asked Hayley.

You nodded. "Lucy."

You have the following choices:

*Pen*
1. Magic lessons, slow changes.

*Pen*
2. Tearful good bye to your lab.
