My family physician, Dr. Penny Bowman walked in looked perplexed. "Well, this is a new case for the record books." Frowning, she said. "Our records did show that you were five- eight but, upon measuring you..." She winced. "You are now five- five."
"I shrank even more..." Turning pale, I demanded.
looking at my clothing confirmed it, they were more loose than ever and I began to tear up as I looked at Penny, my eyes pleading. "What is causing this?"
Penny sighed. "I don't know..." Softly, she replied. "Nothing like this has ever been recorded in medical history."
I began to cry as mom tried to comfort me. "Is there anything you can do, doctor?" Worried, she demanded. "Something to stop this shrinking?"
Penny sadly shook her head. "Not without knowing what had caused it, no." Serious, she replied. "I will have to order some tests and try to find an underlining cause..."
"But... It's my birthday..." Crying, I pleaded.
"At the rate you are shrinking, you may end up celebrating it the size of a newborn." To my further tears, Penny countered. "We need to get to the bottom of this and fast."
Albeit reluctantly, I nodded. "I'll call your friends and let them know you are in the hospital." Softly, mom said. "All they need to know is that you are sick."
Again, I reluctantly nodded and mom walked off, retrieving her cellphone. "What a way to celebrate my birthday..." Pouting, I said.
"Well, on the bright side, you will go down in medical history." Trying to be light, Penny said only it only made me pout more.
