Mom Meets the New Me

    by: BeeJay Author IconMail Icon
Not long after I got into my new pants, I heard Mom pulling into the driveway. As far as she knew, I was still James. How would she react to finding that her son was now her daughter?

I could hear Andy and Emma calling Mom's name, even before she got into the house. Perhaps they were eager to tell her about the new me.

"Hello, kids," Mom said. "Where's James?"

"Julie's up in her room," Andy replied.

"Who's Julie? Does your brother have a girl in his room? He knows that's against the rules."

"James is Julie now, Mommy," Emma said. "The centaur turned him into a girl."

"I'm not in the mood to play, Emma," Mom said. "James! You'd better be alone in there, buster!"

With a sigh, I opened my door. "Hi, Mom."

"Who are you? And where is James? And where do you get off, calling me Mom? I've never even seen you before."

"It's true, Mom. I'm James, or I was. I'm Julie now."

"What are you talking about? Did James put you up to this?"

"Do you remember the time when I was little, and I decided to wrap a towel around my head, but I left myself naked?"

It was one of her favorite stories about me, partially because it embarrassed me so much. "There's no way James told you that story," Mom said.

"You're catching on, Mom."

"You... you really are James?"

"Please, Mom, call me Julie."

She sat on my bed. "How did this happen? How could it happen?"

"I don't know. All I know is, I've been changing, bit by bit, all day today. Emma has been a big help, finding things for me to wear. She couldn't do it all, though: I'm going commando here."

Mom pulled me in for a hug. "As long as you're okay, that's all that matters,... Julie. I guess I'll have to take you shopping."

That night, after I put on my favorite oversized T-shirt to use as a sleep shirt, Emma came into my room. "Can you paint my toenails?"

"Only if you paint mine."

So that's what we did. Emma didn't mind the mistakes I made, and I got a kick out of having purple toenails.

Mom came to the door. "I was wondering what all the giggling was about," she said. "Bedtime, young lady."

Emma got up and went to her room. "You're adjusting to this better than I would," Mom said to me.

I shrugged. "It just feels right, you know?"

"Goodnight, Julie."

"Goodnight, Mom."

I fell asleep, not knowing that the changes weren't done yet.
