Steven descended the stairs to the shop floor, carrying his nifty new 'toy' in his trouser pocket, despite the company having a rule against carrying 'personal items' on them at work. He just wasn't going to let this wonder of technology out of his sight. He was glad he worked the evening shift, since the shop was usually closed to customers, but tonight wasn't one of those evenings, the shop was open until 8:00pm.
"I don't even know if this thing works!" Steven mumbled to himself, as he briefly took the remote out of his pocket to study it. He then slipped it back into his pocket and walked over to the 'Productivity Sheet' on the Help Desk, to see which sections Liz had assigned him to tonight. It wasn't a surprise, the Cleaners and Disposables sections as always. By now it was second nature to him shifting boxes of bleach and washing powder or stacking packs of toilet rolls on the shelves. It was a tedious, routine job but it gave him an income, so he tried not to complain too much.
As he grabbed an empty rubbish bag, Steven made his way to the Cleaners section, and on the way he took careful note where his co-workers were at. Nicola and Tracey ("Waggy") were on the toiletries section (shampoo, deodorant, etc), and Becca and Luke were on the Pets Food section. Natalie was working the Housewares department 'next door' to him, Andrea and Gail were on the Kitchen section, Becky was putting all the stationary out, and Laura and Mona were struggling on the Seasonal department (summer toys, gardening tools, weedkiller, etc). Aaron was over the other side of the store working his Paint and decorating sections, and the ever-talkative Charlotte was near Aaron on the Home Adornments section (lamp shades, picture frames, etc). Then lastly...Yvonne and Helen were on the Food & Confectionery section.
Steven knew that his friend (and supervisor) Liz was in the Goods In area making sure the delivery truck driver took back all the empty cages and tote boxes, and his manager Elizabeth was most probably upstairs in her office doing paperwork. He wondered whether he'd even have the opportunity to use the remote, or whether it would be better to wait until his shift ended at 9:45pm.
One of the possible options open to him was trying out the remote on people around town, rather than his friends. There were always people out drinking and socialzing every night of the week, moving from pub to pub, nightclub to nightclub. However...that would mean waiting several hours until he had finished with work.
Then again...he could always confide in one of his friends and tell him/her about the remote, although he was sure he/she wouldnh't believe him until he proved it worked.
