Over an hour had passed. Discarded bowls, empty plates, and scraps of food littered the floor around the couch. The smell of food, sweat, and gas permeated the living room. Star wearily brushed hair out of her face, exhausted. Mary had eaten everything that Star could find to give her in the kitchen, save for dinner, which Star was now worried would not be even close to enough. Chips, pasta, vegetables, everything that Mary, and later, Star had shoved into her gullet was gone. And yet...
Mary was an absolute mess. Her various rolls and crevices were filled with crumbs, spills, and splatters of all kinds. Her T-Shirt was soaked through with soups, sauces, and sweat. Her face, covered as it was in cheese, broth, bread bits and chip crumbs, could have passed for a modern art piece. But most impressive of all this was her belly. Mary's massive stomach had gone from its usual saggy and flabby state to being round, and much much firmer. Where normally her belly would droop over the end of the couch cushions and hang towards the floor in rolls, it now stuck out quite a bit farther, and obscured her view forward. Star had no idea how much food she had eaten, but it looked (and felt) like a hundred pounds.
Mary was exhausted too. She'd moved her arms more in a few hours than she usually did in a day. She panted, trying to get air into her small and generally inadequate lungs. Not only had she moved her arms enough to actually burn (!) some calories, she also had eaten more food than ever before. But she wasn't done yet. Her stomach let out an angry growl, and pangs of hunger gripped at her distended belly. "STAR!" Mary cried, "I'M STILL HUNGRY!"
Star looked wearily at Mary, incredulous and tired. There was an enormous quantity of food in the basement, but Star now had no doubts that Mary would most likely eat all of it. She resigned herself with a heavy sigh, and set off to the basement.
