There is only one way you're going to win this bet, and it's putting all your money on a spinning wheel game. The chances were slim, but the payouts were huge when you did win.
After spending all your cash on tokens, you approach the game, which is quite simple really. The large wheel closely resembles what you see on Wheel-of-Fortune, with different ticket amounts on sections of the wheel. The higher the prize, the smaller the wedged section is. There were 4 areas that coughed up 1,000 tickets, but they were barely big enough for the token to land on. To make it more difficult, token shooter spins out the tokens on their side, as opposed to flat. Even if one did hit the section, the token usually rolled around on the wheel, sometimes falling off completely and awarding no prize.
Here we go," you say to yourself.
You insert your first coin in, then take aim. While it is tempting to aim first for the 1,000 ticket sections, you decide to start slowly, aiming for a 20 ticket section. You hit your mark and are rewarded with tickets. Firing your second coin, you're off the mark and don't get any tickets....
Fast forward awhile later......
You feel like you've been at this forever, but an end is in sight. You're sitting at 9.000 tickets, assuming you've kept good count so far. A few younger kids have been watching you play, awed by how you're doing. They don't even seem to care you're taking up one of the 3 wheel stations in the whole arcade.
But now, you have a choice to make. You're down to only 5 tokens, and you still need 1,000 tickets to hit your goal.
"I can either go for the 200 and 500 prizes..." you take a look across the wheel, "or I can aim all 5 at the 1,000 prize."
Math has never been your strong suit, but you feel your best chance is to go with the latter option. You've already scored one 1,000 ticket prize today, though it took you quite a few attempts to hit it; definitely more than 5.
Focusing on the one of the sections, you take your time in aiming. The kids are surprisingly quiet and patient, though eagerness is written all over their faces. You take the shot....and miss. An unfavorable roll didn't even score you any tickets.
Shot two.....miss the 1,000, but hit a 50. That's not going to help much though.
Shot three......miss and hit a 10.
Shot four.........HIT HIT HIT!!!
Though the token rolls a little, it circles right back and lands nearly square on the 1,000 ticket section. The kids around you applaud almost as excited as you are.
"What's going on?"
You turn around, and Maisie is walking towards you. She sees all the tickets you have and gasps.
"Oh my...you didn't actually do it, did you?"
"Yep, 10,000 tickets," you exclaim proudly.
Maisie looks unsure of how to react. The kids congratulate you, then scatter to the wind. You collect all your tickets and head off to the counter to buy the Angry Birds toy, Maisie following close behind. Indeed, she counts up all the tickets and you do have 10,000 and a little extra.
"I can't believe it," she whispers, then looks around. "It'd look bad if you just gave it to me right off the bat. Can you wait until after I'm off?"
You take the stuffed toy. "Sure! Meet in the parking lot?"
She shakes her head. "Yeah, but maybe we'll do this....thing somewhere else."
Her face looks embarrassed, possibly ashamed. On the other hand, you feel happy and proud, walking out the door with a big grin on your face.
