Nelly dived into the dark waters, the first aid kit held in one tentacle. Maria followed.
The first thing she noticed was that the water wasn't very cold. The second was that the salt water didn't sting her eyes.
Nelly turned and shouted "Come on!", waving ahead. Maria tried to reply, but all that came out was bubbles.
"You need to empty your lungs of air!" Nelly said. "Breathe in!"
Maria hesitated. Then again, she didn't have much choice. She took a deep breath, and felt the seawater pouring into her lungs, displacing the air. She then felt a new sensation - water passing through her gills.
Confident that she could breathe safely, Maria swam after Nelly. However, while Maria was in good shape, she just couldn't keep up with Nelly. After thirty minutes of swimming, she was exhausted.
Nelly swam up to her. "Sorry! I forgot that humans can't swim well! Here..."
