With one uncharacteristically brave step out the door, Kate wore a nervous smile across her more than chubby face - struggling against the urge to visibly fawn at the same old boring you from a several mile distance. Your consistent docile mannerisms presented a cruel paradox, for they were as easy to approach as they were difficult to confront for such a passive girl like her. However, YOU, as usual, were completely blind to the arguably subtle movements she attempted to make in order to combat the apocalyptic horror of finally asking you out. A cheerful ditzy laugh as she stubbed her right foot on a stationary and visible locker, nearly tripping several times in the hope to get a decent sashay down with her top heavy form; all of Kate’s adorkable tactics and recoveries, wasted on a complete imbecile.
“Hey Katie”, you warmly reply without a care in the world. And after she greets you with friendly body language, she sadly draws a total blank. The pause grows ever more painful as she desperately tries for find one miserable little word to say to you. Anything could break the sudden spell of silence over her, yet all she could come up with was meek dulcet noises. You show concern, but without any knowledge that this is specifically your fault, your actions only set Kate further off. She is nearly brought to tears and YOU STILL CAN NOT TAKE A GODDAMN HINT THAT SHE IS TRYING TO POUR OUT HER OWN HEART TO YOU.
Must I do everything for you?!
A sudden wave of gut-wrenching guilt belched out a succession of phrases that you would accept if it would just keep Kate from crying. “I’m sorry. You look great. Want to catch a movie tonight?” – C.J. was not sure exactly where these lines came from, but when the speckled girl made a severe U-turn towards ecstatic joy and a quiet accepting nod of the offer – well, whatever works, you guessed?
In an emasculating display of your own personal strength it almost takes both hands to lift Kate off the ground, but you are rewarded with a hug that quite literally takes your breath away. When oxygen returned to your lungs, Kate’s beet red face mumbled out what could have been an apology as she immediately retreated to some dark corner of the campus faster than her husky physics should have allowed the marshmallow to travel.
But the several moments of inhalation deprivation left you a little woozy, and honestly, it didn’t help that you apparently subconsciously set yourself up on a date with one of your best friends. The world was in a blur and you weren’t sure if you were up for a regular rigmarole in Chubbesco. You wondered if Nurse Young could arrange a half sick day for you -- or least some time to rest, as you wandered back to her office.
