"Now what was that all about hey? Not been feeding you enough have I? Go lie down on the sofa and I'll bring you a nice warm drink!"
"Thanks mum", you say and trudge into the living room, launching yourself onto the sofa. You still had a headache, probably from collapsing earlier but you had no idea what had brought it on. 'Wait! That chain thing!' , reaching up to your neck, you can feel the chain still there but it seemed thicker and bigger than when you'd last felt it. You try to take it off so your mom won't see but it clings stubbernly to your neck moving over your skin but never away from it.
In a whirlwind, your mom re-entered the room brandishing a mug of hot honey and lemon. "Here, this ought to help whatever it is that you've got", she said, giving you the mug and settling on the sofa by your feet. After a moment of careful watching to make sure that you'd taken a sip she continued "Now, I've got to go back into school, not your school obviously, my one. You're lucky I could come and get you, any later and I wouldn't have been able to leave my class. Make sure you're OK and ring me if anything happens, love you!", and with that she pecked you on the forehead and bustled out of the room. Your mom taught some of the lower years at a local school, you'd been there several times when you were younger and ill so you were glad she decided not to take you this time.
Still puzzled about earlier, you put down your drink and start thinking about the chain again. Even though you'd blacked out earlier, you feel fine now, like nothing had happened but still you couldn't pull this chain off your neck. While you were thinking, your dog Baxter came padding in from the kitchen, he was allowed free roam around the house when everyone was out which your dad didn't like in the slightest. "Hey Bax", you say while stroking him, "I'm really confused about today, could you help me?", the dog just sat there waiting to be petted again, "I'll take that as a yes. OK. Let's think, I was in the cafeteria, I found this box with some jewellry inside it, I touched this chain and it disappeared into me, then the box disappeared, then the chain reappeared, I fainted and now I can't get this damn thing off me!" The dog panted and wagged its tail "Ahh it's no use, the more I think about it the stranger it gets.", Baxter then seemed to nod his head before running back off into the kitchen.
You stand up and head up the stairs to your room. Passing the mirror in the hallway you stop to examine the chain, the collar on your white shirt covered most of it up but you could still see it glinting where you'd taken your tie off. It was a thick chainlinked gold chain that went right the way around your neck (like this: http://www.tnsdiamonds.com/MonsterGold/D... ) but you couldn't feel any weight coming from it. You undo the top few buttons of your shirt to get a better view of it. Events were still racing through your mind 'I fainted then someone slapped me, I woke up, Rachel...' you pause, transfixed on the gold glare the chain was giving and repeat in your head 'Rachel...' indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
