You then wonder if it’s possible for you to travel in time. That voice you heard in your head did say “unlimited power.” So what if you thought about trying to go back nine months...
Your vision goes white.
“Dude, are you okay?” someone’s asking you.
Your vision returns, and you see the face of Jake Kelworth, one of your school acquaintances, looking at you with concern.
“Huh?” you say. “Uh, yeah, I just spaced out for a minute.” You’re standing in a classroom, with some people sitting in their desks, some people walking in, a couple people standing and talking -- class must be about to start. Your brain jolts into action, and you see from your surroundings that this is Ms. Yu’s classroom, where you had your advanced-placement English class last year. You take a seat in the front-row desk that you remember. Jake casts a wary eye toward you as he passes to get to his desk further back.
Outside the classroom window, you see that the leaves are beginning to change colors. A quick check of the display on the cell phone in your pocket: “Fri Sep 24, 11:44 AM” -- it was June 24th a moment ago, so, wow, it really does appear that you went back in time exactly nine months and took the place of yourself, just as you’d imagined. The thought “I should place a bet on the Giants to win the World Series” crosses your mind, but then you realize that your omnipotence means you don’t actually need money.
The bell rings just as the thirty-something Ms. Yu comes striding in carrying a couple of manila folders full of paper, wearing her usual outfit of a long-sleeve blouse, knee-length skirt, and shoes with a low heel. “Good morning,” she says. She’s all business, but you can’t help but think of the type of porn videos where the teacher lets down her hair and takes off her glasses -- well, okay, she doesn’t wear glasses, and her hair is already down, even though it’s only a bit past shoulder-length -- of course, it certainly doesn’t hurt that she’s Asian --
“When we left off yesterday,” says Ms. Yu, “Julie was about to read her essay aloud -- ah, did you hope I’d forgotten? Sorry. Come on up. Remember, as Julie’s reading, don’t forget to take notes, especially on the structure of her paragraphs and the essay as a whole, but if you notice anything else, of course bring that up afterwards as well.” She perches on the edge of her desk and gestures toward the wooden lectern that stands at the front of the classroom.
Julie Evans completes her reluctant trudge up from the back, and you find yourself leaning forward a bit. It’s a Friday in fall, which means there’s a football game tonight, and a pep rally at the end of the school day, and that means Julie is wearing her cheerleading uniform along with the rest of the squad. Of course you have fantasies about cheerleaders, but they of course would never consider you anything more than casual friends -- not even Julie, who’s one of the smarter members of the team and shares most of her classes with you. She fills out the uniform sweater nicely, and has her blonde hair in beribboned pigtails, which looks very cute.
You look back and forth between Julie and Ms. Yu. As long as you’re here, nine months ago, you might as well make use of your powers and have fun with one of them -- the thought of “both” does cross your mind, but you decide you should probably start small.
