"Can we stop there on the way home" you asked. "I really want to try and remember something. Anything"
"Well" your father started, before looking over at your mother. "I guess we might as well. The doctors did say she doesn't have complete memory loss"
"I really don't want to sweetie" your mother said. "It was hard enough the first time. I really don't want to have to relive this"
"Please mom" you begged. "You don't know how hard it is not remembering anything before you woke up in a hospital bed"
It took a few more minutes of convincing but eventually your mother agreed that you could see where the accident happened. After a few more minutes of driving you were taken to a remote, two lane country road. There wasn't a lot around. No houses or buildings of any kind that you could see. When your father pulled the car over you slowly stepped out of the car and looked around. There was still nothing around, just a bunch of trees. What stood out to was that some of them appeared to have been recently been knocked over by some sort of impact. You took a seat on one of the fallen trees with your father and he went on to tell you that your feelings that you shouldn't be a girl are correct. That you had spent the first 18 years of your life as a boy. He told you how you were driving to a friends house about two weeks ago when a pair of tires on your car blew out causing you to lose control of the car and hit the trees we were now sitting on. He also told you how a truck driver moving a new experimental chemical for the government was headed the other direction, and how the sudden stop of his truck so not to have it be a two vehicle crash caused the chemical container to break free from the truck and roll on my car and drench you in the chemicals. When you arrived at the hospital the doctors discovered that the chemical was altering your DNA so they put you in a medically induced coma until the changes stopped.
"So if I was I boy before, where did all these come from" you asked gesturing to the clothes you were wearing.
"Various family members" he replied. "When the doctors learned just what the changes were they told us and we told our extended family. All your cousins your age got together and donated any clothes they don't regularly wear any more that would fit you. But your mother and I got you new underwear. We didn't think you'd like wearing a hand-me-down bra"
The two of us sat there in silence for a minute until your father rejoined your family in the car. Before he left he told you to take all the time you need. You sat there for a few minutes, thinking about what your father had just told you. In that time you suddenly remembered almost everything about the crash. You remembered seeing the headlights from a truck approaching, and the sounds of tires exploding before the car you were driving began to swerve uncontrollably. You remembered fighting the car off the road where you struck a tree before everything went black. You guessed that is when you lost conciseness.
Having decided that there was nothing more here, you headed back to your families car. As you walked through the small clearing to your families car you accidentally kicked something. Looking down you found a small, twisted, piece of metal that you assumed was a part of the chemical container that changed you into a girl. Carefully, you picked it up and held it, noting how it was slightly smaller than your hand. You decided to take it with you, figuring it could be your reminder of the life you used to live. And a reminder of the event that drastically altered where your life would go from here.
After rejoining your family in the car you remained quiet as your father drove home. Nobody was quite sure what to say. As you looked out the window at the passing scenery, your sister asked if stopping at the accident site helped. You replied, telling her that you weren't sure yet. But it was good to at least know that the feelings you got in the hospital were right.
