You heard the shuffling of more than two feet but no words. That was surprising due to Maria's generelly bubbly attittude. You had the impression they were not overly keen to be spotted. The door to her brother's room was half open. Quickly you entered the room and peeked around the corner. Careful steps on the stairs announced their approach.

Three heads appeared slowly. Although they had their back turned to you it was clear that the other two guests of Maria were girls of her age. "Shhhhhhhht. He might be up here." Maria whispered much too loud. You retreated to the spot behind the door ready to scare the girls to death if they were entering the room. Slowly the girls approached along the floor, but Maria's room came first. "...told you he is really..." you wanted to hear more but softly the door closed with a soft clank. You wondered what to do. Stay silent and wait what is happening? Greet the girls? Or even confront Maria in front of her guests for breaking rules (leaving the house and bringing over guests without approval)?
