Chapter #5

Cyclical Amnesia

    by: Unknown
"You have cyclical amnesia that hits you once every month," Sam explains.

"What do you mean? How is this even possible?" You ask, more than a bit thunderstruck.

"You have what is called 'recurring transient global amnesia.' Once every month you forget where and who you are."

That last part caught you off guard. You still knew your own name, right? And while you might have been wrong about having a girlfriend, where did you get that feeling in the first place? And you definitely still knew certain details about yourself, like your birthday and even your Social Security number. At least, you're pretty sure you did.

"I know what you're thinking, because you always ask this question next. Yes, you do remember certain details about yourself. Other details get slightly warped shall we say. Like this 'girlfriend' you always think that you have. Your brain is vaguely aware that you have a significant other, but can't access the information to tell you that it's me. So you think you have a girlfriend even though you can't remember anything about her, even her name. Basically, you remember some general details, like your birthday, but lose most of the specifics, like that fact that I'm your boyfriend." You can't help but notice that Sam moves a little bit close every time he mentions he's your boyfriend, as if to emphasize that point.

"This is crazy," you say, your mind reeling from all the information.

"I think you mean that you're crazy, hon," Sam said, smiling in spite of himself. He reached over and gently started to massage your thigh. "It's okay though! That's what you have good ol' perfectly sane Sam for!"

You want to recoil from his touch and yell at him for being too forward. At least, that's how you should feel. But something about this feels good and moreover very...natural. "Okay. So I have amnesia. And you said it happens every month. Does that mean..."

"Yes. You are going to get your memory back. Usually it happens slowly over an hour or two. Once it lasted about a day, but it's never lasted longer than that." You look at the ground, uncertain. Sam will have none of that. He grabs your chin and forces you to look him straight in the eyes. "I know what you're going through right now, and I promise we've been through it several times before. Your memory will come back. It always has before, and it will this time."

Whatever uncertainty you had before melts in Sam's sincere gaze. You've never felt this way before about anyone. Or, at least, you think you haven't felt this way about anyone before. If what Sam says is the truth, you think that this just might be how you think about him when you remember who he is. Even now, with his face so close to yours...those eyes...and his lips...

You're both surprised by what happens next. You lean forward just a little bit and find your lips pressed against his. Getting over his initial shock, Sam responds enthusiastically and passionately, closing whatever distance remained between you too and pushing you down onto the bed. The kiss seems to last forever, and you find yourself hoping that Sam is telling the truth.

Breaking away from the kiss, you notice...
