"Super powers?" Sam repeated. "Well, that would be interesting. Honestly, I thought you were talking about wishing for world peace or something cliche like that. But yeah, if I could have any super power, it would be..." Her voice trailed off. "But what does it matter? It's not like it's ever going to happen."
Suddenly, Sam disappeared. Her clothes were still there, however, clinging to a form that Dan could no longer see. It was like she had suddenly become invisible.
"What's wrong?" Sam asked, noticing his expression.
"Sam?" Dan said, forcing himself to keep his voice calm. "Go to the bathroom."
"What? But I don't need to go."
"No, seriously," he said. "Go to the bathroom, and look in the mirror. By the way the shoulders of her sleeves moved, he could tell that she shrugged, then turned around and left.
The park had a large out door bathroom that was several steps up from an outhouse. When Sam got there, she looked at her reflection and gasped. She was invisible! She concentrated, and managed to will herself visible again. She turned her powers on and off a few times for practice, then decided to have fun with them. She made herself invisible again and stripped out of her clothes so there wouldn't be any telltale floating T-shirts revealing her position. She hid her discarded clothes in the corner behind a garbage can and went back outside.
She felt strangely giddy, walking around in the park--in the nude. She could feel the grass on her bare feet, the wind on her bare skin, and even the sunlight, although she cast no shadow. She knew she was invisible, but part of her wanted to cover herself up and dash back into the bathroom before anyone noticed.
Dan had decided to sit on a bench while he was waiting, and he didn't see her at all. She sat down beside him and tapped him on his shoulder. He turned and looked right through her. She couldn't help it any more and started giggling.
"Sam?" he said. "Is that you?"
"Of course not," she laughed. "I'm one of your other invisible friends."
"Wow," he said. "This is pretty weird."
"Tell me about it," she replied. "Say, this isn't your fault, is it?"
"No, of course not," he said, lying through his teeth. "Why would you say that?"
She shrugged, even though he couldn't see her. "Well, you asked me about my favorite super power, and then this happened, so I figured that you found a magic lamp or something."
He laughed. "No, Sam, I can honestly tell you that no magic lamp was involved. I figure that sometimes things just happen for no reason."
She nodded. "I guess."
Neither spoke for a moment. "You know, if people see me talking to you like this, they're going to start thinking I'm crazy," Dan said. "Could you turn visible again?"
She blushed. "Uh, no."
"What? Is this permanent?"
"No," she admitted. "But the thing is, I"m kind of, um, naked right now."
"Oh," he said, embarrassed. "I see."
"I certainly hope not."
Then, in the spirit of voyeurism, Dan made it so that Sam was invisible to everyone but him. He gasped as his friend appeared sitting on the bench next to him. She was hot! He never noticed before, maybe because he always considered her just a friend or because she was always wearing, well, clothes, but she was a total babe!
"What?" she asked.
He made his eyes lose focus and looked away so it wouldn't look like he could see her. "Uh, I was just thinking that you have super powers now. So right now, the question is, will you use them for good or evil?"
She cocked an eyebrow that Dan made himself ignore. "I'm not a super villain," she said. "Why would I use them for evil?" Her eyes wandered to the other side of the park and a mischievous grin spread across her lips. "For fun, though, is another matter. Look who's here." She pointed across the park. Dan almost fell for it.
"Where?"
"Oh, right, you can't see me." She grabbed his hand and pointed it at Megan. Megan was one of their classmates. She was something of a snob and was wearing her cheer leader's uniform even though school was over. Holding his hand, Sam dragged him towards her. "Come on. We're going to have some fun."
"Okay, so what do you want to do with Megan?"
"Well, for starters, you're going to ask her out."
"What? But she'll turn me down. I know, I tried it before."
"What? You asked out her?"
"Yeah, why?"
"Nothing." Sam sounded uncomfortable. "I just figure that you could do better than someone like her."
"Thanks, Sam, I'm glad you think that way. Unfortunately, she didn't."
"Well, that's why you're going to ask her again."
"And what are you going to be doing?"
"I'll be surprising."
"That doesn't comfort me."
"Comfort," she said, "is the last thing I'll be doing."
Dan approached the hot cheerleader he had a crush on the entire school year. "Hey, Megan. Fancy seeing you here."
Megan gave him a look of pure contempt and ignored him.
"Uh, I just want to say that you look great." Sam sneaked up behind her, and it was really hard for Dan to focus on Megan with Sam standing in her birthday suit right behind her.
Megan rolled her eyes at him and finally condescended to answer. "Thanks. It is good to know that my appearance has met with your highly esteemed approval."
"Yeah." He felt ridiculous, but if he had to, he could probably make everyone forget this ever happened. "So, I was wondering if you were doing anything this weekend."
Megan gave him a flat look. "Even if the only two guys left on the planet were you and some guy who lost his face in a car accident..."
She never finished her sentence, because at that moment, Sam...
