Chapter #4

Little League

A small boy, who looked to be around ten years old or so, jogged up in a dirty baseball uniform, sweat standing out on his face. He took his baseball cap off, wiping his arm across his forehead, spreading a smudge of dirt there to a streak. He grinned, showing off a single missing tooth, an injury no doubt incurred during one of his practices. He had short, spiky brown hair that looked like it had been recently cut, with bright blue eyes. A smattering of freckles were tossed over his nose and cheeks. "Hey mister! You got any milk in there?"

His breathing was a bit heavy as he asked this, eyes focused on Sherman's cart. The man smiled and pulled a carton out, handing it to the young boy. "That'll be two dollars, young man."

The boy fished in his pockets and pulled out four quarters and a crumpled one dollar bill, dropping them onto the cart before grabbing the milk eagerly. "Thanks mister!"

He jogged off, heading back towards his friends on the other side of the park. There was a baseball diamond there and eight other boys were gathered, relaxed and chatting. The boy ran up to another kid his age, this one with longer, black hair and an easy going expression on his face. "Hey Ryan!" He said, holding his hand up in a lazy wave as the boy ran up to him.

"Hey Seth!" Ryan said, popping open the carton of milk and gulping it down. His throat bobbed as he finished the carton in three massive chugs, sighing happily and crumpling the carton up in his hand as he did so. "Great practice today! I think my batting is really improving!"

"Too bad you still can't catch worth beans." Seth snickered, rustling what little hair Ryan had left, pushing down on his head.

"Hey, hey, hey!" Ryan protested, stumbling back, pulling his cap on and swinging the brim around to the back of his head. "Knock it off! I'm working on one thing at a time! First batting, then catching!"

"I hate to break it to you, but you can't really practice getting taller, shorty." Seth said, pressing the one sore spot he knew Ryan had.

Ryan frowned. He was a very energetic and feisty lad, but he knew that he lacked height. He was short for his age as it was, the rest of his teammates towering head and shoulders, at least, above him. He had tried to make up for it by practicing extra hard and working out but even though he had more muscle than anyone his age, he still didn't have the vertical leap to really jump up and grab the errant fly balls. "Just for that, I'm going to go home and do... like... a HUNDRED squats! Next time we practice I'll be able to jump over your head!"

Seth smiled and grabbed his bat, slinging it over his shoulder. "Just don't give yourself jelly legs again. You're no good to the team if you can't even walk!"

Ryan stuck his tongue out, but smiled before grabbing his stuff and running off home. He didn't live too far away from the park and was bursting in through his front door within ten minutes of running. "Andyyyyyyyy! I'm hooooooome!"

"Welcome home little dude." An older male's voice called out from a different room, upstairs. Ryan pounded his way up the stairs, practically kicking open his brother's room, rushing inside.

"Andy, Andy, Andy! Guess what?!" Ryan practically yelled, nearly vibrating with energy.

"What?" Andy replied, leaning back in his computer chair, hands behind his head.

"I hit a home run today! It was AWESOME!" Ryan cheered, throwing his arms in the air.

"That IS awesome!" Andy said, leaning forward and giving his brother a high five. "Wanna get some ice cream to celebrate?"

"Nah, I gotta do some exercises!" Ryan said, his smile dimming slightly. "I need to work on my legs so I can jump REALLY high!"

Andy chuckled and turned back to his computer screen. "Good luck, little dude. Don't push yourself too hard though."

Andy was, in a lot of respects, the exact opposite of Ryan. Whereas Ryan was loud and energetic, Andy was soft spoken and laid back. Ryan loved sports, Andy preferred computer games. Ryan was built like a little truck, Andy was rail skinny. His hair was also longer and shaggier than Ryan's, though the same color. Ryan laughed and said, "Don't worry, I won't!" and then ran out to his room next door.

Once inside, he closed and locked his door, stripping out of his uniform, down to his briefs. He looked at himself in his full length mirror and grinned, flexing an arm. "Yeah! Gonna work TWICE AS HARD tomorrow!"

Nodding to himself, he began to get dressed again, this time in a pair of shorts and a tank top. Moving the center of the room, he strapped a weighted belt around his waist and began to squat, moving in a practiced motion with a smooth rhythm, moving down and then up at a steady pace. He was so focused on his workout, that he didn't notice the heat building up in his stomach. The special milk he had drank earlier was starting to work its magic, the potent growth potential spreading in fiery lines through his body, from his center all the way up and all the way down. Slowly, but surely, he was beginning to grow.
