Lisa reached into one of the bags that she'd taken from me and rummaged around inside it. "Let's see what we've got in here to work with," she said excitedly. "Obviously, the clothes won't be useful here," she said analytically as she switched from one bag to another. "What about this?"
She pulled out the new Kindle that I had bought to give to my mom as a gift. "Put that back," I demanded. My voice cracked as I came close to tears.
Lisa examined the Kindle. "How did you know that I wanted a Kindle, Erica?" she asked.
"I bought it for my mom," I explained.
"How sweet," Lisa mocked me. "I guess that means that you really want this back, huh?" I nodded. "Maybe I can give it back. I'll want something else in exchange."
"You guys took all my stuff," I pointed out.
"Not everything," Alicia retorted.
"That's right. I'll give you back the Kindle if you give me your shoes," Lisa said.
