Chapter #6

Question some of the girls by the bar

    by: shell_shocke Author IconMail Icon
Chase new better than to try and approach Kitty at this time. But maybe… if he worked his way up the totem pole, he would find the answers he was looking for. While he wasn’t exactly sheltered from having a social life in his teenage years, Chase wasn’t a complete novice at approaching girls his age. Taking a quick gulp of alcohol, Chase steeled himself and picked out a group of three girls who were gossiping with each other at the end of the bar.

“Sick party, huh?” He approached them, trying to act nonchalantly. All three girls were wearing the same choker that he had seen on a number of girls around the club, the pink LED lights matching the glow from their phones. They momentarily glanced up from their devices, looking Chase up and down with his slicked back hair and knockoff chain, giving him a ‘you’re trying too hard’ kind of smirk.

Chase needed to pivot his strategy hard before he struck out with this group. “My name’s Chase, can I get you ladies a drink?”

One of the girls scoffed, as the three of them were no strangers to being hit on. “We’ve all got boyfriends,” she answered so calmly that even a lie detector probably wouldn’t be able to tell if she was making it up or not.

Chase was definitely on the backfoot in this conversation already. “Oh, what I meant was,” he stammered, “I was curious about something and was wondering if you girls could help me out.”

The second girl chortled. “What are you, like a narc or something?”

“No, uh, I just saw you girls all had those necklaces. My sister wanted one for her birthday, so I wanted to know more about them.” Chase was not nearly doing as good of a job at bluffing his way through this conversation as the girls were. So much for all that confidence he had a few minutes ago.

“Is this guy for real?” the third girl murmured to her friends, intentionally loud enough for Chase to hear, “This has got to be the weirdest pick-up attempt ever.” The second girl looked at Chase as if he was living under a rock. “How does he not know about Glam Bands?” she added.

The first girl, who seemed to be the leader of the group, playfully waved her friends off before motioning to her empty glass. It seemed like she was willing to humor Chase for some free alcohol. Happy to finally make some progress in the conversation, Chase happily obliged them with a nod to the bartender.

As the girls sipped on their drinks, the leader who introduced herself as Staci, tapped on her phone a few times and held the screen for Chase to see. “You, like, know about Myzone right?” Myzone was the largest online shopping distribution company in the world. You really would have to live under a rock to not know what it was. Chase nodded as Staci continued, “Glam Bands are the ultimate fashion integration device. They link to your socials, keep you up with the latest trends, and use AI to connect to Myzone to hook you up with all the latest fashion on some killer deals. FashionTech just put them out this year; they’re all the rage.”

FashionTech. That was a name Chase had heard before. Pretty much all of the products that the girls he had been investigating were promoting came from FashionTech. Even the island resort that the girls like Kitty had been frequenting was owned by it. Things were finally coming together.

“FashionTech runs that resort in the Mediterranean, right?” Chase asked, “I saw Kitty-B went there a bunch.”

The second girl, also known as Tammy, scoffed at the mention of Kitty. “You wanna get in with Kitty? She’s way out of your league, bro,” she responded in a mocking tone.

“I just mean, that resort is pretty exclusive, right?” Chase asked with an uncomfortable smile.

Staci gave Chase a dissatisfied nod. “Yeah, it’s invite-only. I’ve been on the wait list for months but haven’t heard back yet. There is another way to get in though… you gotta be one of the top ranked people on QuickGlam.” She swiped through her phone and opened an app with a familiar pink glow. Chase could see that the LED on her choker illuminated in unison. “If you connect your Glam Band to QuickGlam, the more followers and popularity you have raises your overall ranking. There’s even some challenges that you can complete on the app that will get you noticed. By the algorithm or whatever. Girls like Kitty, they only collab with the top ranked girls on the app.”

The task seemed clear to Chase now. He needed to get his hands on one of these Glam Bands and investigate the app to see how he could infiltrate the upper caste and secure an invitation to the resort. Then he would be able to get some real answers about what was going on. He thanked the three girls for their time and focused his goal on acquiring one of those chokers. As he gazed around the club, he noticed a girl who was quite inebriated and had taken off her Glam Band and held it haphazardly in her grip. He knew stealing was wrong, but...
